1st, Big Walley's easy handicap system: Take the number of strokes over par and subtract 3
Now, the real way...

A USGA Course Rating of 74.8 means that 74.8 is expected to be the average score of the best 50-percent of rounds played by scratch golfers (Tama Hills white tees, Korai greens is 68.6).
Slope rating is a number representing the relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to course rating. Slope can range from 55 to 155, with 113 being considered a course of average difficulty (Tama Hills white tees, Korai greens is 117).

By Differentials

A handicap differential is the difference between the adjusted gross score and the NCGA/USGA Course Rating, multiplying the difference by 113, dividing the results figure by the NCGA/USGA Slope Rating and rounding off to the nearest tenth. The following is an example for a course with a 71.5 Course Rating and a 130 Slope Rating.

Adjusted gross score

Course Rating

71.5

23.5

Handicap Differential

113 x 23.5 divided by 130 = 20.4

The value 113 in the above formula is the national standard for Slope Ratings and is used to weigh differentials.
